Chandragiri Fort's history dates back to the 11th century, initially built by the Yadava rulers. It later came under the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire, serving as their fourth capital. The fort witnessed significant events and was home to various rulers, including the Saluva and Aravidu dynasties. It played a crucial role in the region's political and cultural landscape. The fort was later taken over by the Golconda sultans and then the British. The Raja Mahal Palace within the fort is an important example of Indo-Islamic architecture.
