    History

The Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary was initially established as a reserve forest in 1915, known as the Hollongapar Reserve Forest. Its primary aim was to protect the habitat of the Hoolock Gibbon. Over the years, due to increasing threats to the gibbon population and its habitat, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1997. The sanctuary's history is intertwined with the conservation efforts to safeguard the Hoolock Gibbon, India's only ape. The local communities and forest department have played a vital role in protecting and preserving the rich biodiversity of this area. It stands as a symbol of successful conservation initiatives in the region.
