Kareng Ghar was primarily constructed during the reign of Ahom King Rudra Singha in the late 17th century. It served as the royal palace and residence for the Ahom kings. The original structure was made of wood and other perishable materials, but later renovations and expansions were carried out, mainly using brick and stone. The palace was the center of Ahom political and cultural activities. Over the years, it witnessed several significant events of the Ahom dynasty. Though some parts of the palace have been damaged over time, it still stands as a significant historical landmark, showcasing the architectural prowess of the Ahom rulers and their refined taste.
