The Mahabodhi Temple stands at the site where Prince Siddhartha Gautama, after years of ascetic practices, achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, becoming the Buddha. Emperor Ashoka built the first temple here in the 3rd century BCE. Over the centuries, the temple has been rebuilt and expanded several times, reflecting different architectural styles. It suffered damage from invasions and natural disasters, but each time, it was restored by devoted followers. The current structure largely dates back to the 5th-6th century CE. The temple has been a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists for centuries and continues to hold immense spiritual and historical importance. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, recognizing its universal cultural significance.
