    History

The current structure of the Vishnupad Temple was built by Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore in the 18th century. However, the site's history dates back much further. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu subdued the demon Gayasura by placing his foot on him. The footprint on the rock is believed to be that of Vishnu. The temple has been rebuilt and renovated several times throughout history. The presence of the footprint makes this site immensely important for Hindus, who come here to perform the 'Pinda Daan' ritual for the salvation of their ancestors.
