The Teevardev Buddhist Monastery is believed to have been constructed during the 8th century AD, under the patronage of the Somavamshi dynasty, who were ardent followers of Buddhism. Sirpur, during this period, flourished as a major Buddhist center, attracting scholars and monks from various parts of Asia. The monastery served as a center for learning and religious practice. Archaeological excavations have unearthed numerous artifacts, including Buddhist sculptures, inscriptions, and pottery, providing valuable insights into the religious and cultural life of the time. The decline of the Somavamshi dynasty eventually led to the abandonment of the monastery, leaving it to be reclaimed by nature until its rediscovery and excavation in the 20th century.
