Established in 1987, the Cactus Garden was the brainchild of Dr. J.S. Sarkaria, an Indian civil servant with a passion for botany. His vision was to create a specialized garden dedicated to the conservation and propagation of cacti and succulents, which were increasingly threatened in their natural habitats. The garden started with a modest collection but gradually expanded over the years, acquiring rare and exotic species from various parts of the globe. It has since become a leading research center for succulent plants, contributing to the conservation efforts and promoting awareness about their ecological importance. The garden is now managed by the Department of Forests and Wildlife, Chandigarh Administration, and continues to attract visitors and researchers from around the world.
