The Royal Enclosure was built primarily during the 14th-16th centuries CE under the reign of the Vijayanagara emperors. It served as the administrative and residential center for the rulers. The city's strategic location on the banks of the Tungabhadra River and its natural defenses made it an ideal capital for the empire. After the Vijayanagara Empire fell to invading Deccan Sultanates in the 16th century, the Royal Enclosure and much of Hampi were plundered and left in ruins. Today, it stands as a testament to the architectural prowess and cultural richness of the Vijayanagara era.
You can visit this place as one of the major attraction. From outside you may find it very unwelcome, but you can find good monuments like kings sitting place and a huge stepped pond inside.
The Royal Palace of Hampi once stood in this area, constructed of sandalwood. During the Mughal invasion, the palace was set ablaze and destroyed. Today, only the stone structures remain.
Carry your water bottle and wear cap/ umbrella. You will love the scenic beauty and continue clicking.
Most of the palace is being restored timely. I would recommend taking a guide (600/rs) to really understand what you are looking at. It is amazing to see all the rich culture, to know more about Indian people and culture during ancient times and trading. The only drawback is the climatic conditions of the area. It is scorching hot between 11 am to 3 pm, which makes the trip a bit exhausting, however you have tram service available to reach the palace from the starting point at 20/rs per person both ways. Refreshing drinks (fresh fruit juice and buttermilk), souvenir stall are available at reasonable price. The entry ticket is 40/rs per person which covers all the tourist places. Dance mandir for the queen and how the sound is produced from the stone are amazing to see and hear. Also buy the book "Hampi" which gives a lot of information
