The history of Mangaladevi Temple is intertwined with the founding of Mangaluru. Legend states that a princess from Kerala, Parvati, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, renounced her royal life and became a Sanyasini. She arrived in the region with her Guru, Machhendranath. They settled near the banks of the Netravati River. When the princess passed away, a temple was built in her honor, enshrining her as Mangaladevi. The temple is believed to have been built in the 9th century by the Ballal kings of the Alupa dynasty. Over the centuries, the temple has undergone several renovations and expansions, with contributions from various rulers and devotees. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith and cultural heritage of the Tulu Nadu region.
