Jaganmohan Palace was built in 1861 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III as an alternate royal residence. It served as the royal court for several years and hosted many dignitaries. After the original Mysore Palace burned down in 1897, the royal family resided here until the new palace was completed in 1912. In 1915, the palace was converted into an art gallery and auditorium. The gallery houses a significant collection of artifacts from the Wodeyar dynasty, including paintings, sculptures, and musical instruments. The auditorium continues to be a venue for cultural performances, preserving the palace's legacy as a center for the arts.
The museum and structure of palace is amazing. There are plenty of paintings preserved from wellknown painters including Raja Raviverma. "The lady with lamp", the world famous painting by Mr. Haldankar can be seen here.
It’s a nice palace and exhibits a lot of paintings .. if you love ancient history, this is the right place .. it was not crowded even though we went during Dasara time . A must visit place for all the art lovers .. it’s interesting to know the history of the wadayers
A cultural treasure trove, showcasing an exquisite collection of traditional and contemporary Indian art. The gallery's impressive array of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts offers a deep dive into the rich artistic heritage of India. A must-visit for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
This is a wonderful palace, auditorium and gallery. The collection are wild, such things of beauty. Its very much visible that the patrons/kings enjoyed art so much that they saw it important to collect from great masters of Indian art throughout the country. Every inch of the palace is beautiful. The sculptures, carvings, furnitures.... The painted room with the royal family tree is mind blowing! The music instrument room was stunning! One negative I feel about the space is that its not maintained very well. Its swept definitely, but cobwebs and broken shards of ceilings and and windows are scattered in corners. This wonderous museums needs urgent care. I was a regular visitor here as a child and I had seen how much importance the place was given. The handicraft stalls are sleepy ruins now and there isn't much of a crowd at the museum. There seems to be a lot of artifacts missing too. It looks like a forgotten glory, but I hope it is given its deserved attention again and maintained well.
