Adi Shankaracharya, during his mission to revive Hinduism, established four cardinal Peethams (monasteries) in the four directions of India. The Sringeri Sharada Peetham, established in the South, is the first of these. He chose Sringeri, a place already known for its spiritual significance, as the location. Legend says he witnessed a cobra sheltering a frog from the sun, an act of inherent harmony that led him to select this spot. He installed the deity Sharada (Goddess of knowledge) and initiated a lineage of Acharyas (spiritual leaders) who have preserved and propagated Advaita Vedanta philosophy for centuries.
