The area around Thekkady was once a dense forest inhabited by tribal communities. The construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam in 1895, under British rule, led to the creation of the Periyar Lake and significantly altered the region's landscape. This also resulted in the displacement of some indigenous populations. Recognizing the ecological importance of the area, the Periyar National Park was established in 1934 as a game reserve, later upgraded to a tiger reserve in 1978. Since then, Thekkady has evolved into a prominent ecotourism destination, attracting visitors from around the globe who come to experience its rich biodiversity and natural wonders. The region's history is intertwined with conservation efforts and the sustainable development of tourism.
