The Thumboormuzhy Dam is part of the Chalakudy River Valley Development Project, aimed at providing irrigation and managing water resources in the Thrissur district. The dam was constructed to harness the Chalakudy River's water for agricultural purposes, benefiting the local farming communities. Over time, the area surrounding the dam was developed into a tourist spot, with the addition of the hanging bridge, gardens, and other attractions. The 'ezhattumukham Prakriti Gramam' hanging bridge was specifically designed to enhance the visitor experience, offering panoramic views of the river and its ecosystem. The butterfly garden was later created to promote biodiversity and educate visitors about the importance of butterflies in the ecosystem. The transformation of Thumboormuzhy from a purely functional dam to a popular tourist destination reflects the growing interest in eco-tourism and sustainable development in Kerala.
