Alchi Monastery is believed to have been founded in the late 10th or early 11th century by the great translator Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. It belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism but exhibits strong influences of the earlier Kadampa tradition. Unlike many other monasteries in Ladakh, Alchi escaped destruction during the Mongol invasions, which is why its ancient murals and artwork are so well-preserved. The monastery served as an important center of Buddhist learning and art for centuries. Today, it is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India and a popular tourist destination.
The special place with Buddhist culture through Thangka paintings, giant statues and temple architecture from over 1000 years ago. Outside the temples are planted with many Ladakh apricot and apple trees... so, when I stepped inside I was overwhelmed by the mysterious beauty that has been preserved for thousands of years. So, I think that, this place you should visit when traveling to Ladakh.
One of most interesting monastery I ever visited. Alchi Monastery is an highly recommended temple complex in Ladakh region.
This monastery is more than 1000 years old and the temples here are considered to be very sacred. Phones need to be submitted outside and are not allowed in the monastery. There are 4 temples here and inside each, you will find paintings that are very ancient and have slightly faded but still mark the significance of centuries old artwork. Do visit this place once and enjoy the vibes here. There is a river flowing behind this monastery and gives a really calm vibe.
A 10th Century Monastery. Well Maintained and Peaceful. Alchi Monastery was built in the 10th century . A very clean and well maintained place . Entry ticket Rs 100 per person . Camera and mobile phones are not allowed inside the premises ,have to be kept in a locker at the entrance . It features ancient paintings and has several shrines with huge statues /figurines each dedicated to an avatar of Lord Buddha ...eg the Lord of compassion ,the lord of wisdom . Due to the seepage on walls many paintings have been damaged. Still this place is worth visiting to know about the glorious history of Buddhism .
