Lohagad Fort has a rich and varied history, having been ruled by several dynasties over the centuries. It was initially under the Satavahana dynasty, followed by the Chalukyas and then the Rashtrakutas. Shivaji Maharaj captured it in 1648, recognizing its strategic importance. It briefly fell to the Mughals but was recaptured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1670. The fort served as a treasury for the Maratha Empire for some time. Later, it was used by the Peshwas. In 1818, Lohagad was captured by the British during the Third Anglo-Maratha War. Its strategic location made it an important military base throughout its history.
