Visapur Fort, also known as Visapur Killa, shares a rich history intertwined with its twin fort, Lohagad. It was built during 1713-1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. Visapur was primarily constructed to serve as a watchtower and strengthen the defenses of Lohagad. Due to its higher elevation, it offered strategic advantages for surveillance. The fort witnessed numerous battles between the Marathas and the Mughals. In 1818, during the Third Anglo-Maratha War, Visapur Fort fell to the British forces. They destroyed most of the structures to prevent it from being used again for military purposes. Despite the destruction, the ruins still stand as a testament to its historical significance and architectural prowess.
