The Global Vipassana Pagoda was built to express gratitude to Gautama Buddha and to serve as a monument of peace and harmony. The inspiration for the Pagoda came from the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar. Construction began in 1997 and was completed in 2008. The dome is the world's largest unsupported stone dome and is built with interlocking stones without any cement or other binding agents. The Pagoda was inaugurated by the then President of India, Pratibha Patil, in 2009. It is a significant center for Vipassana meditation, a technique taught by Gautama Buddha.
