Constructed between 1664 and 1667 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sindhudurg Fort was built to counter the rising influence of the Siddi naval power and to protect the Maratha Empire's coastline. Shivaji personally supervised the construction, ensuring its strategic importance and defensive capabilities. The fort's construction involved transporting tons of iron ore and stones. It is believed that over 100 Portuguese architects and engineers were involved in its design. The fort once housed a population of several thousand residents and served as a crucial naval base.
