The history of the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians is deeply intertwined with the spread of Catholicism in Northeast India. The original church was destroyed during an earthquake in 1897. Subsequently, a new church was constructed, which also suffered damage over time. The present cathedral was designed by Italian architect, Fr. Ugo Caramello, and inaugurated in 1936. It stands as a symbol of resilience and faith, having witnessed significant historical events and societal changes. The cathedral's construction and subsequent expansions reflect the growing Catholic population in the region and the dedication of missionaries who worked tirelessly to establish and nurture the church. Over the years, it has become a vital center for religious and social activities, playing a crucial role in the community's spiritual life.
