Historically, Bhitarkanika was a hunting reserve of the erstwhile Kanika Raj family. The area's rich biodiversity and strategic location made it a valuable resource. Recognizing its ecological significance, the Government of Odisha declared it a sanctuary in 1975 and subsequently a National Park in 1998. The name 'Bhitarkanika' is believed to be derived from the local deity 'Kanika', and 'Bhitar' means 'inside', signifying its location within the Kanika kingdom. Conservation efforts have been crucial in protecting the mangrove ecosystem and its inhabitants, making it a thriving example of successful wildlife management.
