Chiplima's history is intertwined with the construction of the Hirakud Dam, one of the first major multipurpose river valley projects in India after independence. The dam, completed in 1957, harnessed the waters of the Mahanadi River for irrigation, flood control, and power generation. Chiplima, situated downstream, became the site of a hydroelectric power station, utilizing the water released from the dam's power canal. The stepped waterfall, a result of the canal's design, unintentionally created a picturesque tourist attraction. The name 'Chiplima' is believed to be derived from the splashing sound of the water cascading down the steps. Over time, the area surrounding the power station developed into a popular recreational spot, drawing visitors with its natural beauty and tranquil setting.
