Originally built by the Bhangi Misl Sikh confederacy in the 18th century, the fort was later conquered by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire. He significantly expanded and fortified the structure, giving it its present form. Named after the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, the fort served as a strategic military base and played a vital role in various historical events. Following the Anglo-Sikh wars, the British took control of the fort and used it as a military garrison until Indian independence in 1947. After years of being closed to the public, the fort was finally opened as a museum and tourist attraction in 2017, showcasing its rich history and cultural heritage.
