    History

The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology was founded in 1958 by the 11th Chogyal of Sikkim, Palden Thondup Namgyal, with the aim of preserving and promoting Tibetan culture and Buddhist studies. It was established with the support of the Indian government and has since become a leading institution for Tibetan studies worldwide. The institute's museum houses a significant collection of Tibetan artifacts, many of which were brought to Sikkim by Tibetan refugees following the 1959 Tibetan uprising. The library holds a vast collection of Tibetan manuscripts and books, making it a valuable resource for scholars and researchers.
