History
The Aliyar Dam was constructed between 1959 and 1969 as part of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project, a multi-purpose project aimed at harnessing the waters of the western rivers for irrigation and power generation in the rain-shadow region of Coimbatore and other districts. The project involved building a series of dams and tunnels to divert water from the Parambikulam, Aliyar, and other rivers. The Aliyar Dam itself was designed to store and regulate the water flow for irrigation purposes, benefiting agricultural lands in the surrounding areas. Over the years, it has not only fulfilled its primary function but has also become a popular tourist destination, contributing to the local economy and providing recreational opportunities for visitors.
