Berijam Lake was created in 1867 as a reservoir to supply water to the town of Periyakulam. It was formed by damming the Berijam stream, which originates in the Palani Hills. The surrounding forests were declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1992, further enhancing the area's conservation efforts. Originally designed for irrigation purposes, the lake's scenic beauty and tranquil atmosphere soon attracted visitors, transforming it into a popular tourist spot. Its history is intertwined with the development of Kodaikanal and its surrounding areas, showcasing the region's commitment to both functionality and natural preservation.
Worth place to visit in Kodaikanal.. Need to get permission from forest office for the car or there is a shuttle facility arranged by forest department from Moir point. Costing ₹250 - ₹500
Stunning, in the mid of forest, pure nature. Wonderful place to visit. One needs to take permit one day in advance from forest dept.in kodaikanal to access through private car else forest department buses are also good option with 250 bucks return journey of 3 hours. View of lake and some of the forest views are stunning. Worth the experience
Best place for nature lovers. It was best part of my Kodai visit. It is part of the reserve forest and requires permit to enter, private cars are not allowed inside. You can park your car near the entrance at Moir Point and take forest jeep to reach the lake which is around 10km inside for around Rs.300. Also you can ask your hotel or taxi company for forest tour package which will cost around Rs.3000 to and from your hotel.
Such a beautiful, serene and pictursque spot. Especially in winter looks like a dream. Need forest department permission to enter. Permissions are given to limited vehicles like first 40. Preference is given to local vehicles first. In Moir point, we need to show the pass and start this beautiful adventurous ride to lake. Can spot elephant dungs and bison so need to drive carefully. If elephant tracks are seen, ride will be cancelled by forest dept.
