The Kazimar Big Mosque was established in the 13th century by Hazrat Meer Ahmad Ibrahim, a Qazi (judge) and direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad who arrived in Madurai from Yemen. He was granted land by the Pandyan king Kulasekara Pandyan for the construction of the mosque. The mosque has been renovated and expanded over the centuries, incorporating various architectural styles. Its historical significance lies in its role as one of the oldest Islamic institutions in South India and its continued service to the Muslim community. The dargah within the mosque complex is a revered site, attracting devotees from diverse backgrounds seeking blessings and spiritual solace. The mosque's history reflects the long-standing presence and contributions of the Muslim community to the cultural fabric of Madurai.
