    History

Legend has it that after the Mahabalipuram shore temples were built, a devastating Tsunami was approaching to submerge the entire town. The devotees prayed to Lord Vishnu, and he appeared in the form of Sthalasayana Perumal to protect the town. It is believed that Bhoothathazhwar, one of the twelve Alwar saints, was born in this temple. The temple's history is intertwined with the Pallava dynasty, who were great patrons of art and architecture in this region. While the exact construction period is debated, it is likely that the temple has undergone several renovations and expansions over the centuries, with contributions from various dynasties that ruled the area. The temple continues to be a living testament to the devotion and architectural skills of the past.
