St. Stephen's Church was built in the early 19th century, during the British colonial era. The church was constructed using timber from Tipu Sultan's palace, which was dismantled after his defeat in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. The church's original structure was relatively simple. Over the years, it underwent several renovations and expansions. The stained-glass windows, a prominent feature of the church, were added later. The church has served as an important center of Christian worship in Ooty for over two centuries and continues to be a significant landmark in the town.
St. Stephen’s Church in Ooty is a remarkable piece of history, dating back to the early 19th century. Built in 1829, it stands as one of the oldest churches in the Nilgiris, originally commissioned by Stephen Rumbold Lushington, then Governor of Madras. The church’s origins are deeply tied to the British colonial period, with Freemasons playing a significant role in its construction—a reflection of the Masonic influence prevalent at that time. The church is a fine example of Gothic-style architecture, featuring wooden beams that were brought all the way from Tipu Sultan’s palace in Srirangapatna after his defeat. Its location on the Ooty-Mysore Road makes it easily accessible. If you’re in Ooty, a short drive or walk from the town center will get you here. The church opens at 10:00 AM and closes by 5:00 PM, giving ample time to soak in the serene atmosphere. The stained glass windows and rustic charm of the building offer a peaceful retreat from the hustle of Ooty’s tourist spots. Just a short distance away lies an eerie yet fascinating cemetery, where you’ll find centuries-old tombs that add a mysterious air to the visit. These ancient graves, some dating back to the 1800s, offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who once walked these hills. The place feels like stepping back in time, with history etched in every corner. St. Stephen’s Church is more than just a place of worship; it’s a slice of Ooty’s rich history.
Very old and great church in Ooty. Well maintained and soo silent inside. Very peaceful & we stayed here so more than a hour.
One of oldest and historical church...must visit place in Ooty..it would have been better if the authority's had maintained it's well...more than hundred year's old cemetery is in verry bad condition without proper care and maintenance
Very old n beautiful church. You just go in and sit on the bench quietly, you will feel peace within you.
