Built by the Chola king Rajaraja II in the 12th century, the Airavatesvara Temple is part of the Great Living Chola Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is believed that Airavata, the white elephant of Indra, the king of gods, worshipped Lord Shiva at this temple, hence the name. The temple complex originally had several structures, but many have been lost to time and natural calamities. Despite this, the surviving structures showcase the advanced engineering and artistic skills of the Chola artisans. The temple's inscriptions provide valuable insights into the social, economic, and religious practices of the Chola period. The temple stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Chola empire and its patronage of art and architecture.
