The Tenkasi Kasi Viswanathar Temple has a rich history dating back to the Pandya dynasty. It is believed to have been built by Parakrama Pandyan in the 15th century. Legend says the king, on his way back from Kasi (Varanasi), dreamt of Lord Shiva instructing him to build a temple similar to the one in Kasi. Unable to transport a Shivalinga from Kasi, he found a self-manifested lingam in Tenkasi and built the temple around it. Over the centuries, the temple has undergone several renovations and expansions by various rulers and patrons. The towering gopuram, a later addition, stands as a testament to the temple's enduring legacy and architectural significance.
