Legend says the king, on his way back from Kasi (Varanasi), dreamt of Lord Shiva instructing him to build a temple similar to the one in Kasi. Unable to transport a Shivalinga from Kasi, he found a self-manifested lingam in Tenkasi and built the temple around it. Over the centuries, the temple has undergone several renovations and expansions by various rulers and patrons.
