Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti
The Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti at Ajmer — universally known as Ajmer Sharif — is the holiest Sufi shrine in South Asia and one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India, welcoming 5–10 million pilgrims annually of all faiths. Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (1141–1236 CE), the founder of the Chishti Order in India, is revered for his teachings of universal love and service to humanity. The white marble dargah complex includes the shrine, the Akbari Masjid (built by Emperor Akbar after his pilgrimage on foot from Agra), and two enormous cauldrons (degs) used for langar. The annual Urs festival (death anniversary, 6 days, Rajab month) draws millions.
Emperor Akbar walked barefoot from Agra to Ajmer to fulfil a vow after the birth of Prince Salim (later Jahangir). He also donated a langar cauldron. Humayun, Shahjahan, Jahangir and later British governors all made pilgrimages here. Akbar reportedly visited every year for 14 years.
