Rama
Ayodhya, one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism, is the birthplace of Lord Rama. The newly consecrated Ram Janmabhoomi Temple (prana pratishtha January 2024) stands at the exact spot believed to be Lord Rama's birthplace, replacing centuries of contention. The grand Nagara-style temple with its rose-pink Rajasthan sandstone spans 2.7 acres and is visible from across the city. Ayodhya is simultaneously one of India's fastest-growing pilgrimage destinations with a new international airport, upgraded rail connectivity, and a transformed riverfront on the Sarayu river.
The site has been a contested holy spot for centuries. After a 500-year dispute, the Supreme Court of India in 2019 awarded the land for the Hindu temple. The consecration ceremony on 22 January 2024 was attended by the Prime Minister and drew 500 million viewers on television — the most-watched event in Indian history.
