About Chitrakoot (Ram Ghat & Kamadgiri)

Chitrakoot, straddling the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, is where Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spent about 11 of their 14 exile years — making it the single most important location on the Ramayana Circuit after Ayodhya. The Mandakini river winds through the town, and its Ram Ghat is where Rama is said to have bathed daily. The Kamadgiri hill (literally 'the wish-fulfilling mountain') is worshipped as a form of Rama himself, and pilgrims perform a 5 km barefoot parikrama around its base. Key sites include the Bharat Milap temple (where Bharata came to plead with Rama to return to Ayodhya), Hanuman Dhara, Janaki Kund, Sphatik Shila, and the Gupt Godavari caves.

Chitrakoot is uniquely associated with Goswami Tulsidas — he composed portions of his Ramcharitmanas here and reportedly had a vision of Rama and Lakshmana as children at the Ram Ghat. The town has been a continuous pilgrimage centre for over two millennia.
