Ganga
Gangotri is one of the four Char Dhams of Uttarakhand and the origin point of the Ganga, one of India's holiest rivers. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, stands at 3,415 m on the banks of the Bhagirathi river. According to legend, King Bhagirath performed penance here for thousands of years to bring the celestial Ganga down to earth. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April–May) and closes on Diwali (Oct–Nov), its doors sealed after a ceremonial puja for the winter. The walk along the rushing glacial river to Gomukh (the actual glacier source, 19 km further) is one of India's iconic treks.
The present temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa, a general of the Gorkha army, in the early 18th century. The site's sanctity is referenced in the Ramayana, Mahabharata and multiple Puranas. The Semwal priests who conduct the rituals trace their lineage back over 500 years.
