Neminath (22nd Tirthankara)
Girnar Hill (1,117 m) near Junagadh in Gujarat is one of the most important Jain pilgrimage sites — where the 22nd Tirthankara Neminath attained nirvana. The hilltop has a cluster of 16 marble Jain temples (12th–15th century CE) of extraordinary carved beauty, along with Hindu shrines to Amba Mata and Gorakhnath. The 10,000 stone steps (grueling in summer) are climbed by tens of thousands of pilgrims daily. The Girnar area also has ancient Ashoka inscriptions (3rd century BCE) in Brahmi script — among the earliest discovered in India. The annual Lili Parikrama (April) green pilgrimage circuit draws a million pilgrims.
Girnar's antiquity is evidenced by the 14 Ashoka rock edicts found at the base of the hill (256 BCE). The marble temples were built primarily in the 12th century CE by the merchant princes of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Neminath's association with the hill is described in the Jain Agamas.
