Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the ruined capital of the once-mighty Vijayanagara Empire (14th–16th centuries) and — in the Ramayana — the kingdom of Kishkindha, where the monkey-king Sugriva and Hanuman lived. Rama and Lakshmana came here in search of the abducted Sita and made their alliance with the vanara army that would eventually cross to Lanka. Anjanadri Hill, across the Tungabhadra river from Hampi, is believed to be Hanuman's birthplace and hosts a small monkey-god temple at its summit (reached via a 570-step climb). The Virupaksha Temple, one of the very few Vijayanagara temples still in continuous worship, dates from the 7th century and predates the empire itself. The surrounding boulder-strewn landscape, with the Vittala Temple's stone chariot, Achyutaraya Temple, Elephant Stables, and Queen's Bath, is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in India.
Hampi was sacked in 1565 CE after the Battle of Talikota by the combined armies of the Deccan Sultanates. The Virupaksha Temple survived because it was in continuous worship. Anjanadri is one of two sites (with Anjaneri near Nashik) that claim to be Hanuman's birthplace.
