Shiva (Prithvi Linga)
Kanchipuram is one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism and one of India's great temple cities, with over 100 active temples. The Ekambareswarar Temple (dedicated to Shiva as the Earth Linga), one of the Pancha Bhuta Stalas, has a 59-m Dravidian gopuram and a sacred mango tree in its inner court said to be 3,500 years old — its four branches bear four different types of mangoes representing the four Vedas. Kanchipuram's temples include the magnificent Kanchi Kamakshi Amman (one of the three most important Shakti shrines in south India) and the Varadaraja Perumal Temple.
Kanchipuram was the capital of the Pallava dynasty (3rd–9th century CE) and later the Chola kingdom. Adi Shankaracharya established one of his five mathas here. The city is also famous for Kanchipuram silk sarees, woven for over a millennium.
