Shiva
Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is uniquely Dakshina Mukhi (south-facing), the only such Jyotirlinga imbued with special tantric power as a swayambhu (self-manifested) linga. Ujjain is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism (Sapta Puri) and the site of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela held every 12 years. The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, where Lord Mahakal is ritually bathed and worshipped with sacred ash (bhasma), is one of the most extraordinary rituals in Hinduism — a thrilling, deeply spiritual experience that draws devotees from across the world.
Mentioned in the Mahabharata, the Meghaduta by Kalidasa, and numerous Puranas. The current temple complex was rebuilt by the Scindia dynasty in the early 19th century after it was demolished by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1737. The Mahakal Lok corridor (inaugurated 2022) added a grand 900-m promenade with 108 murals depicting Shiva's stories.
