Shiva and Parvati
Mallikarjuna Swamy temple at Srisailam on the Nallamala plateau is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and simultaneously one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas — a uniquely dual-sacred status. The presiding deities are Mallikarjuna (Shiva) and Bhramaramba (Parvati). Surrounded by the deep forests of the Krishna Gorge, the temple dates to the 3rd century BCE. The massive fortified complex with watchtower gopurams contains numerous smaller shrines and a large sacred tank. The 'pata abhishekam' (cloth-wrapped abhishekam without physically touching the lingam) is a rare ritual offered here.
Referenced in the Mahabharata and the Skanda Purana. The 12th-century saint-poet Akkamahadevi composed devotional poetry to Mallikarjuna. The Vijayanagara kings and the Reddy dynasty significantly expanded the complex. The Srisailam dam nearby created a scenic gorge landscape.
