    About Mayureshwar Temple

Mayureshwar (also Moreshwar) at Morgaon is the first and most important of the eight Ashta Vinayak temples of Maharashtra. Pilgrims traditionally start and end the Ashta Vinayak yatra here: the circuit is complete only when the devotee returns for a final darshan at Morgaon. The presiding deity is Ganesha seated on a peacock (mayur), holding a lotus and adorned with a golden crown. The idol is self-manifested (swayambhu). The temple has high fort-like walls with four towers at the corners, characteristic of the Bahmani Sultanate era exterior, while the inner sanctum is much older.

Mentioned in the Mudgala Purana, a text devoted entirely to Ganesha. The fort-like exterior enclosure was built during the Bahmani Sultanate period for protection. Peshwa rulers later performed worship here before major campaigns.
