Shiva
Nageshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, located 17 km from Dwarka in Gujarat. The presiding deity is Shiva worshipped as Nageshwar — 'Lord of Serpents' — and his consort is Nagalai. A massive 25 m statue of a meditating Lord Shiva dominates the forecourt, visible from kilometres away. The temple is part of a superb pilgrimage cluster: Dwarkadhish Temple (Char Dham), Bet Dwarka island (where Krishna lived), and Rukmini Devi Temple are all within a 30 km radius, making Dwarka one of India's densest sacred geography zones.
Nageshwar is mentioned in the Shiva Purana in the legend of Supriya: a devoted Shiva worshipper imprisoned by the demon Daruka who prayed to Shiva from captivity. Shiva appeared to destroy Daruka and established his eternal presence here. The large Shiva statue was installed in the late 20th century.
