Shiva
Omkareshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, situated on the Mandhata island in the Narmada river — an island whose natural shape resembles the sacred syllable ॐ (Om). Two temples stand on the island: Omkareshwar (the Jyotirlinga, on the south bank) and Amareshwar (north face), traditionally visited together as part of the parikrama. Pilgrims take a boat or cross the suspension footbridge to the island. The Narmada river, which flows east to west (uniquely among India's major rivers), is itself considered supremely holy.
The island has Puranic significance in the legend of King Mandhata, a great ancestor of Lord Rama, who performed penance here and had his wishes granted. The 23-km Narmada Parikrama around the island is a popular circuit. The present temple was restored over centuries with patronage from the Peshwa dynasty.
