Adinath (Rishabhanatha)
Palitana is the holiest pilgrimage site for Jains, with more than 800 intricately carved marble temples clustered on Shatrunjaya hill. Pilgrims climb around 3,800 steps to reach the summit shrine of Adinath, the first Tirthankara. The temples must all be visited and descended by nightfall, as no one may sleep on the sacred hill.
Built over 900 years from the 11th century onwards; the Adinath temple is the principal shrine. The Anandji Kalyanji Trust manages the complex.
