Buddha (relic stupa)
The Sanchi Stupa is one of the oldest and best-preserved Buddhist monuments in India, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Commissioned by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, the Great Stupa is famous for its four intricately carved toranas (gateways) depicting the life of the Buddha. The hilltop complex includes monasteries, temples and pillars.
Ashoka built the original brick stupa over relics of the Buddha; it was later enlarged and encased in stone, with the ornate gateways added in the 1st century BCE.
