    About Sarnath (Dhamek Stupa)

Sarnath is where the Buddha gave his first teaching (Dhammacakkappavattana) to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment. The massive Dhamek Stupa marks the exact spot. The site includes the Ashoka Pillar (whose lion capital is India's national emblem), monastery ruins, the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara, and an excellent archaeological museum.

Emperor Ashoka built the original stupa and pillar in the 3rd century BCE. The current Dhamek Stupa dates to around 500 CE.
