Bahubali (Gommateshwara)
Shravanabelagola is one of the most important Jain pilgrimage centres, home to the 57-foot monolithic statue of Bahubali (Gommateshwara) carved from a single granite block around 981 CE. Standing atop Vindhyagiri hill, it is among the tallest free-standing statues in the world. Every 12 years the Mahamastakabhisheka anointing ceremony draws pilgrims from across the globe.
Commissioned by Chavundaraya, minister of the Ganga dynasty, around 981 CE. Chandragiri hill nearby holds ancient Jain basadis and inscriptions.
