Shringverpur, about 45 km northwest of Prayagraj (Allahabad), is the ancient capital of the Nishadraj king Guhya, the tribal chief and boatman who ferried Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana across the Ganga at the start of their 14-year exile. The site is one of the most emotionally significant stops on the Ramayana Circuit — it marks Rama's first act of egalitarian friendship, when he embraced Guhya as an equal despite the social hierarchy of the time. The main site is the Nishadraj Ghat on the Ganga, where a modern memorial statue of Rama and Nishadraj embracing has been installed. Archaeological excavations at Shringverpur (1977–86 by ASI) uncovered a large ancient water-reservoir tank system dated to the 1st century BCE — the oldest documented urban water-management system in India.
The story of Nishadraj embracing Rama is one of the most-quoted passages of the Ramcharitmanas as a symbol of caste-blind love. Uttar Pradesh Tourism is developing the ghat as a major heritage site under the Ramayana Circuit development plan.
