    About Sravasti (Jetavana Monastery)

Sravasti (modern Sahet-Mahet) in Uttar Pradesh was Buddha's principal residence during the last 25 years of his teaching career, and he spent 24 of the 45 rainy-season retreats (vassa) here. The Jetavana Monastery, gifted to the Sangha by the merchant Anathapindika, is where Buddha delivered many of his most famous discourses including the Metta Sutta. The site contains ruins of the Gandhakuti (Buddha's cell), the Anandabodhi tree, and the Angulimala Stupa. Sravasti is where Buddha performed the famous Twin Miracle (Yamaka-patihariya).

Anathapindika reportedly paid for Jetavana by covering the ground with gold coins — the price Prince Jeta demanded. Chinese pilgrims Faxian (5th c.) and Xuanzang (7th c.) both visited and documented the site.
