Tara and Tarini
Tara Tarini temple is one of the four most important Shakti Peethas and is dedicated to the twin goddesses Tara and Tarini — manifestations of Shakti seated on Kumari (Purnagiri) hills near the Rushikulya river in southern Odisha. The goddesses are venerated as benevolent mother figures and the guardians of sailors on the Bay of Bengal. A modern ropeway carries pilgrims to the hilltop; the 999-step stairway remains a popular path for devotional circumambulation. The spring Navratri (Chaitra Parva) festival draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims for the month-long celebration.
Referenced in the Skanda Purana. Historical records from the 9th century CE attest to the temple's existence. According to the Sati legend, the breasts (sthana) of Sati fell here — making this the only sthana-peetha (breast peetha) in the entire Shakti Peetha tradition, with unique theological significance.
