Shiva
Trimbakeshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and among the most theologically significant, as it enshrines all three divine forces — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — in its three-faced (tri-mukha) lingam. The temple name means 'three-eyed lord'. The Godavari river, one of India's longest and most sacred rivers, originates from Bramhagiri hill behind the temple. Nashik hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela every 12 years at the Ramakund on the Godavari, drawing tens of millions of pilgrims. Non-Hindus and women are restricted from entering the inner sanctum.
The current magnificent black-stone temple was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nanasaheb) between 1755 and 1786. It replaced an older temple at the same site. The site's sanctity is referenced in multiple Puranas including the Brahma Purana.
